Program Notes by Martin Pearlman

This elegant gem of a concerto was completed on December 11, 1784, the last of six piano concertos which Mozart produced that year. He played it, along with several of his other new concertos, in a series of subscription concerts given during Lent in early 1785. His father Leopold, who was in Vienna at the time, wrote that the concert was "magnificent" and that "a great many members of the aristocracy were present." He also praised the playing of the orchestra, which in this work is particularly important because of the intimate interplay between the piano and winds. Six years later, Wolfgang performed the work along with his "Coronation Concerto" (Concerto No. 26) in Frankfurt during the festivities for the coronation of Leopold II.
